Ishiyama Ryokuchi Spiral Spring (water play)
About this spot
The Ishiyama Ryokuchi Spiral Spring water-play area, in the south block of Ishiyama Ryokuchi Park (石山緑地) in Minami-ku, Sapporo, is a water-play spot you can enjoy free of charge. The water-play season usually runs from around Monday, June 15 to around Monday, August 31, from 10:00 to 16:00, and the City of Sapporo gives the period as mid-June to late August. The water flows in a spiral and the depth is shallow, so even small children can dip their feet safely. The park makes use of a former Sapporo soft stone quarry, and its greatest feature is that the sheer stone walls and geometric plazas form a space that is itself like a sculpture. Because the water play happens amid scenery totally unlike an ordinary shallow paddling pool, the photos you take here are especially striking. Admission is free, so a short stop before evening also works well.

Tips
Closing is at 16:00. Allowing for changing clothes and packing up, get out of the water by about 15:45. Stone surfaces are slippery when wet, so have children wear water-play sandals. On some days the water does not flow because of weather, water temperature or cleaning work, so check the City of Sapporo information page for that day before you set out. Shade is limited, so a hat and sunscreen are essential.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 50 minutes. The time before evening, when the western sun tints the soft stone red, is striking
