About this spot

A shrine set on a rise in Tomakomai, named, as you would expect, after Mt. Tarumae (樽前山). It has been familiar to local people since the pioneer era, and many families gather here for Shichi-Go-San celebrations and festivals. The precinct at the top of the stone steps is wrapped in trees, and you can physically feel the quality of the air change from that of the town below. Because Tomakomai opens out toward the sea, starting the day at a shrine bearing a mountain's name and then heading down toward the coast is a good way to learn the lay of this land with your body. Visiting is free, and the scale is just right for the first stop of the morning.

Tips

Visiting is free. There are stone steps, so with a stroller it can be easier to leave it at the bottom and carry your child up. Agreeing in advance not to run in the precinct brings peace of mind. On festival days the parking lot gets crowded, so park according to the on-site guidance.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. In the cool morning hours even the stone steps are no trouble
