Tarumaesan Shrine (樽前山神社), Guardian Shrine of Tomakomai

About this spot

A shrine set on a rise in Tomakomai, named, as you would expect, after Mt. Tarumae (樽前山). It has been familiar to local people since the pioneer era, and many families gather here for Shichi-Go-San celebrations and festivals. The precinct at the top of the stone steps is wrapped in trees, and you can physically feel the quality of the air change from that of the town below. Because Tomakomai opens out toward the sea, starting the day at a shrine bearing a mountain's name and then heading down toward the coast is a good way to learn the lay of this land with your body. Visiting is free, and the scale is just right for the first stop of the morning.

北星公園徒渉池は、苫小牧市の北星公園にある無料の水遊び場です。2026年は5月25日(月)から9月30日(水)まで、10:00〜17:00に開放されます。徒渉池に加えて噴水もあるので、水に入るのが苦手な子は噴水のほうから慣らしていけます。水深が浅く、歩き始めたばかりの子でも自分の足で立って遊べるのが安心なところ。この公園の強みは水遊びだけで終わらないことで、多目的の芝生広場と大型複合遊具があるため、水に飽きた子はそのまま陸の遊びへ移れます。開設期間が5月末から9月末までと長いので、夏休みの混雑を外した時期にも計画が立てられます。

Tips

開放は10:00〜17:00です。天候不良や清掃、水質管理の都合で休みになることがあるため、出発前に苫小牧市の案内で当日の状況を確認してください。更衣室は用意されていない前提で、水着は下に着ていくと着替えが楽になります。芝生は日差しを遮るものが少ないので、レジャーシートと帽子を必ず持参しましょう。北海道の夏は日が傾くと急に涼しくなるので、上がったあとに羽織れる薄手の一枚を用意してください。

Tips

Visiting is free. There are stone steps, so with a stroller it can be easier to leave it at the bottom and carry your child up. Agreeing in advance not to run in the precinct brings peace of mind. On festival days the parking lot gets crowded, so park according to the on-site guidance.
