Toyama Prefectural Aquaculture Center Touch Pool

The Toyama Prefectural Aquaculture Center Touch Pool is a free water play spot at the Toyama Prefectural Aquaculture Center in Himi City. Its greatest feature is stepping barefoot into the large outdoor pool and interacting with juvenile fish such as black sea bream and red-spotted grouper, which are released into the waters of Toyama Prefecture, giving an experience completely unlike simply getting into the water. There are touch pools both indoors and outdoors, plus a fish-feeding experience and, from late May, a large tank where you can observe juvenile black sea bream. Admission is free, and nothing inside the facility costs money. Opening hours are 9:30 to 16:30; the centre is closed on Tuesdays from May to October, and closed on weekends and public holidays from November to April (from 1 May 2026 it will also open on weekends and public holidays). Visitors are advised to wear clothes they do not mind getting wet, to bring a change of clothes and a towel, and to wear non-slip shoes or sandals.

Tips

The centre is closed on Tuesdays from May to October, so be sure to check when deciding your date. Eating and drinking inside the pool is not allowed, so hydrate outside the pool. The ground gets wet and slippery, so always prepare non-slip shoes or sandals. This is a facility that handles live fish, so follow the staff instructions and tell children beforehand not to grip the fish tightly. Closing time is 16:30, so getting out by 16:15 leaves time to change and head home unhurried. Enquiring in advance about which hands-on programmes are running is the sure approach.
