About this spot

Said to have been founded in the Sengoku period, this is a Shingon-sect temple formally called Baishoin. Its principal image is believed to bring blessings for eye ailments, earning it the nickname Eye Yakushi, and it has drawn many visitors since the Edo period. The fact that it has lent its name to a station and the surrounding area shows how significant a presence it is in this neighborhood. The grounds have a spaciousness and calm that feel surprising in the middle of a residential area, and there are shaded benches where you can rest. Arai Yakushi Park, the afternoon venue, is right next door, making it easy to connect the morning and afternoon without rushing.

Tips

Since this is a place of worship, remind children not to run around the grounds. On the 8th and 18th of each month, a temple market is held, making the area livelier than usual. Visiting is free. If a memorial service is being held, either observe quietly or shift the timing of your visit.
