About this spot

A Shingon Buddhist temple in Chuo Ward, Chiba City, said to have been founded in the Nara period. The grounds are home to a towering giant ginkgo tree designated a natural monument of Chiba City, whose thick trunk and wide-spreading branches soften the summer sun. Also known as a pilgrimage site on the Bando Sanjusankasho (坂東三十三観音) route, it continually draws visitors who quietly offer prayers. Despite being in the city, the temple carries an air set apart from the bustle, making it just the right place to settle your mind at the start of the day. Looking up at the great tree can also become a memorable experience for children.

Tips

Please visit quietly and be mindful not to disturb other worshippers. Parking is limited, so pay attention to the surrounding traffic when parking. Although the temple grounds are mostly shaded, sunlight is strong while moving around, so don't forget a hat. Restrooms are limited, so it's reassuring to plan to use the facilities at the next stop instead.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Visiting in the morning, when there are fewer people, lets you savor the quiet of the temple grounds.
