Rice terraces spreading through the mountain valley of Sakadani in Nichinan City, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces. The distinctive feature is the old-style stone-walled ridges, and the sight of terraces stacked layer upon layer along the mountain slope is breathtaking. In summer, the rice grows lush and green, rippling like waves when the wind blows across it. From viewpoints with a good vantage, you can take in the terraces and mountain ridges overlapping in a single view. Telling children it's a 'rice field shaped like stairs carved into the mountain' helps convey just how much effort went into making it.
Tips
As this is farmland, please don't step onto the ridges between paddies and view it only from designated spots. Parking is limited, so be careful not to park on the road. There's little shade, so a hat and drinks are essential. It's about a 10-minute drive to Sakadani Campground.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. Before the sun climbs high, the shadows on the terraces stand out clearly.
