About this spot

This area flourished as a post town on the Nakasendo highway connecting Edo and Kyoto, and traces of the old townscape still remain in the heart of Nakatsugawa today. Ruins of the honjin and waki-honjin inns, merchant houses with latticed doors, and buildings with udatsu firewalls dot the street, and following the information signs as you walk reveals the layout of the old post town. Nakatsugawa is also known as the birthplace of kurikinton (sweet chestnut confection), and part of the fun of walking here is passing long-established Japanese confectionery shops lining the road. The distance isn't long, so families with small children can walk it comfortably. It's a landscape shaped by generations of daily life, a contrast to the mountain castle you visited in the morning.

Tips

The street is also a local road used by cars, so hold your child's hand while walking. Each shop's business days vary, so check in advance if you have a specific destination in mind. It's best to use parking in the town center and explore on foot. Having lunch here leaves plenty of time for the pool in the afternoon.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. It's efficient to walk before noon and have lunch here as well.
