About this spot

Towering over the coast of Taro in Miyako City, these are some of the most iconic rock formations on the Sanriku Coast. The central Otoko-Iwa stands roughly 50 meters tall, and standing at its base looking up is a powerful reminder of how small a person is by comparison. On either side stand the Onna-Iwa and Taiko-Iwa, and the way the three rocks stand close together like a family gave rise to the name Sanno Iwa (Three King Rocks). Formed over long ages as waves eroded away softer rock and left the harder strata standing, you can observe the banded rock layers up close. A walking path and stairs lead down to the coast, letting you experience looking up at the rocks while listening to the sound of the waves.

Tips

You'll need to walk down a staircase to reach the coast, and climb back up on the return. Families with small children should go at a comfortable pace. Avoid getting close on days with high waves or rough weather. There's little shade, so bring a hat and something to drink. It's reassuring to check the route from the parking lot to the walking path entrance before you set off.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Morning light shows the rock's features most clearly
