This port serves as the island's gateway, the departure and arrival point for the route connecting Ujina and Kure in Hiroshima City with Etajima. Ferries and high-speed boats arrive and depart here, and in the morning commuters, students, and tourists mingle together. The first thing you notice after getting off the boat is the smell of the sea and the quiet of the inlet, surrounded by mountain ranges across the water. The area around the port is a calm place with only a few small shops and a bus stop, but that's exactly what makes it feel like you've truly arrived on an island. For children, the experience of stepping off the boat itself signals the start of the adventure.
Tips
Ferry times change depending on the season and day of the week, so be sure to check the operator's timetable. If crossing by car, use the ferry's vehicle service. Shops around the port are limited, so it's reassuring to prepare drinks and snacks before boarding.
Best time to visit
About 25 minutes. Crossing on a morning ferry lets you enjoy the port air at its most pleasant
