A Jodo Shinshu temple in Nodera, Anjo City, known as a stronghold of the Mikawa Ikko Ikki uprising. The grounds are surrounded by a moat and earthen ramparts, and with a drum tower still standing, the layout resembles a fortress more than a temple. The main hall reflected on the moat's surface is a peaceful sight, and in the morning there are few visitors, making for a calm stroll. History enthusiasts will find plenty to see, while children will be struck by the curious fact that a temple has a moat. Worship is free, and simply walking around the grounds takes about 30 minutes.
Tips
Since this is also a place where people live and worship, please visit quietly. Watch your footing near the moat and keep an eye on small children. Parking is limited, so follow the on-site signage for where to park. Insect repellent will make your visit more comfortable.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. The quiet morning hours have the best atmosphere.
