This is a renowned Rinzai Zen temple in Ichinomiya City, affectionately known locally as 'Myokoji' (妙興寺). The layout of the temple buildings, from the approach through the main gate to the Buddha hall, is neat and orderly in true Zen fashion, and the spacious grounds are lined with pine trees and earthen walls. It's remarkably quiet for somewhere in the middle of the city, and if you visit in the morning, you can spend time hearing little more than birdsong. Rows of historic buildings make it a place where simply walking the grounds brings a sense of calm. For children, the sheer scale of the large roofs and thick pillars is itself a highlight.
Tips
Visiting is free, but since this is also a place of Zen training, please keep quiet while you're there. Some areas inside the halls are not open to the public. The grounds have gravel and dirt paths, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Parking is available. Mosquitoes appear in summer, so insect repellent will make your visit more comfortable.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. There are few visitors in the morning, so you can take your time enjoying the temple's stillness
