About this spot
Kitaibaraki Citizens' Pool (北茨城市民プール) is an outdoor pool operated by Kitaibaraki City. In 2026 it is open from Monday, July 20 to Monday, August 31, and consists of one 8-lane 50-meter pool plus two children's pools (12m x 12m and 9m x 9m). The long 50-meter stretch of water offers the pleasure of swimming a distance you can't get in a school pool, satisfying to upper-elementary kids and adults alike. With two children's pools, it doesn't get too crowded, letting little ones just getting used to the water play at their own pace. Admission is affordable at 220 yen for adults and 110 yen for elementary school age and under (double for those from outside the city, free with a disability certificate), and is popular with local families who visit repeatedly over summer break. It's an unassuming municipal pool, but that's exactly what makes it a place you can settle into and enjoy for a long stretch.
Season & hours
Name: 北茨城市民プール
Date & time: 7/20 (Mon)–8/31 (Mon) ※水温22℃以下・雨天時などは休館
Venue: 北茨城市・北茨城市民プール
Tips
The pool closes on days when the water temperature drops to 22°C or below, or in rainy weather, so check Kitaibaraki City's official website for opening status before you go. Since this area is near the sea and the weather changes easily, it's more reliable to check the day's information rather than judging by the morning sky alone. Shade is limited, so bring a rash guard and take regular breaks. There are changing rooms and showers. If visiting from outside the city, keep in mind that the fee doubles, and prepare cash accordingly.
Best time to visit
Entering just after midday gives you nearly 4 hours to play until evening, and it's especially comfortable after 15:00 when the sunlight softens.
