About this spot
Located in front of Kanazawa-Hakkei Station, this old shrine is said to have been founded in 1180 when Minamoto no Yoritomo invited the deity of Mishima Myojin. Two bugaku (court dance) masks, reportedly used by Minamoto no Sanetomo and dedicated by his mother Hojo Masako, are designated National Important Cultural Properties. Admission is free, making this a fitting stop that retains traces of the Kamakura period, true to Kanazawa-Hakkei's character.
Tips
Located along the national highway in front of the station, Biwajima Shrine, which floats on Hiragata Bay, is also nearby. If you have time, it's worth visiting as well.
