About this spot

An astronomical observation dome located at the Miyagase Yamanami Center (宮ヶ瀬やまなみセンター) in Miyagase, Kiyokawa Village. Use is free of charge; the center is open 9:00 AM-4:30 PM, and the dome is generally open for use until 9:00 PM. Surrounded by the mountains of Tanzawa and far from large city lights, on a clear night you can look up at a number of stars hard to believe is so close to the greater Tokyo area. Observing at the dome is perfect for a child's first real astronomical observation experience. There is also a parking lot.

Tips

Be sure to check the official website in advance for how to use the dome and whether it's open that day before heading out. Nights in the mountain valley get cold, so come fully prepared with warm clothing. Bring a flashlight when moving around at night and watch your footing.

Best time to visit

After sunset, from around 7:00 PM once the sky is completely dark. Nights around the new moon, when there is little moonlight, are best.
