Egara Tenjin Shrine (荏柄天神社)
Flow of the course
About this spot
A shrine in Nikaido dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane (菅原道真公), the god of learning, and counted among the three oldest Tenjin shrines in Japan. Visiting hours are 8:30-16:30, with admission by donation. The vermilion-lacquered shrine buildings and a great ginkgo tree stand out against the surrounding grove, and visiting in the morning lets you enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. There are also fun discoveries for children to spot, such as the 'Kappa Fudezuka' (かっぱ筆塚), a brush-shaped monument dedicated by cartoonists.
Tips
About a 20-minute walk from the East Exit of Kamakura Station (鎌倉駅). By bus, get off at the 'Tenjin-mae' (天神前) stop, right by the shrine. Kamakura-gu Shrine is only about a 5-minute walk away, making this a perfect first stop for exploring Nikaido.
