Dankazura (段葛)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This is a stone-paved approach set on a raised section in the middle of Wakamiya Oji (若宮大路), the avenue leading to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (鶴岡八幡宮). Since you can walk without worrying about cars, it's ideal for visiting with children. Walking straight from the Second Torii (二の鳥居) toward the Third Torii (三の鳥居) is itself one of the pleasures of visiting the shrine. It's also known for its beautiful row of cherry trees in spring.

Tips

Winter mornings can be quite cold, so dress warmly. This path is easier to walk than the often-crowded Komachi-dori (小町通り).

Best time to visit

Morning, when the air is crisp
