Hake-no-Tana (八景の棚)
Flow of the course
About this spot
This is a scenic viewpoint atop a river terrace overlooking the Sagami River. Hake-no-Tana (八景の棚) is a famous spot counted among the Eight Scenic Views of the Sagami River, and it's free to use. Below flows the Sagami River, with the townscape on the opposite bank and the mountains of Tanzawa lining up beyond it; on a clear day you can even see the silhouette of Mt. Fuji. At dusk, the sky and the river turn a deep red, and after sunset, lights begin to switch on across the river, creating a view where nature and town lights blend together.
Season & hours
Name: 三段の滝展望広場・八景の棚
Venue: 相模原市南区下溝・三段の滝展望広場・八景の棚
Tips
It's windy on the bluff, and the temperature drops sharply after sunset, so warm clothing is essential. The observation plaza is along a roadway, so hold your child's hand while viewing to keep them from stepping into the road. Some areas have few streetlights, so use a flashlight to light your way once it gets dark.
Best time to visit
Around sunset - the highlight is the transition from the Sagami River glowing at sunset to the town's lights coming on
