At the Bandō Prisoner-of-War Camp that once stood here, German prisoners of war and local residents cultivated warm exchanges, sharing culture through bread and cheese making, sports, and music. The German Hall is a museum preserving this history. The highlight is the story of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony being performed in its entirety for the first time in Japan by the prisoners. A theater with figurines reenacting the concert and exhibits depicting life in the camp convey the bonds of humanity transcending national borders in a moving way. The building itself, designed in a Western architectural style reminiscent of German townscapes, is a photogenic spot.

Tips

Shares parking with Daiku-no-Sato Roadside Station (道の駅 第九の里), so there is no need to move your vehicle to visit both. Check official information in advance as the museum has closures. Checking the theater performance times first before viewing the exhibitions ensures efficient planning.

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Afternoon hours allow you to leisurely enjoy both the theater and permanent exhibitions.
