正式名称は賀茂御祖神社。世界遺産に登録された古社で、境内を包む糺の森は12万平方メートルを超える原生林です。参拝は自由で、鳥居をくぐると空気がひんやりと変わります。

境内の参拝は無料です。授与所は9時から16時30分ごろまで(12時15分〜13時15分を除く)。
