Chizu Post Town, Ishitani Family Residence and Ikaihara Settlement - Historic Town Stroll
Chizu Town in eastern Tottori Prefecture is a post town on the Inaba Kaido (因幡街道) road, where daimyo processions once traveled during sankin-kotai. This historic stroll course lets you walk slowly through Chizu Post Town, where traces of that past remain vivid. In the morning, marvel at the massive timber-framed earthen floor and beautiful gardens of the Ishitani Family Residence, an exemplary modern Japanese-style mansion spanning approximately 3,000 tsubo, then step into the world of classic films at the Katsuki Nishikawa Film Memorial Museum in the post town's Western building. At midday, savor a mountain vegetable meal in the thatched pavilions scattered through the cedar grove landscape of Mitaki-en, and in the afternoon, discover the primordial village scenery of Ikaihara Settlement beyond the mountain tunnel—a sight often called the "original landscape of Japanese mountain villages." Conclude with souvenir shopping at Suwa Sake Brewery, the brewery of local sake "Suwa Izumi." Perfect for a leisurely day immersing yourself in history and mountain village life.
