2026 – The 63rd Wakkanai Minato Antarctic Festival Grand Fireworks Display (稚内みなと南極まつり大花火大会): A Full One-Day Course
This course centers on the 63rd Wakkanai Minato Antarctic Festival Grand Fireworks Display (稚内みなと南極まつり大花火大会), held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, around the North Breakwater Dome (北防波堤ドーム) in Wakkanai City, and takes you around Japan's northernmost port town over a full day. At midday, start from Wakkanai Station (稚内駅), Japan's northernmost train station, and feel firsthand that the station building itself is a monument to the northernmost point. Next, enjoy fresh seafood cuisine and souvenir shopping at Wakkanai Fukukō Market (稚内副港市場). In the afternoon, head out to Cape Noshappu (ノシャップ岬) and take in the cape's lighthouse, an aquarium, and views of the Sōya Strait (宗谷海峡). In the evening, climb up to hilltop Wakkanai Park (稚内公園) and enjoy the superb view of the town and sea from the ‘Gate of Ice and Snow’ (氷雪の門) and the Centennial Memorial Tower (開基百年記念塔). Once the sun sets, return to the venue area, secure a spot, and fill up on festival food stalls while waiting for the show to start. At 8:30 PM, about 2,500 fireworks launch near the North Breakwater Dome (北防波堤ドーム) into the night over the Sōya Strait (宗谷海峡). In case of bad weather, the event is postponed to Monday, August 3, so be sure to check for the latest updates on the day. It's a day to fully enjoy both the sea and fireworks unique to Japan's northernmost port town.
