2026 Ishinomaki Kawabiraki Festival: A Full-Day Course
This one-day course centers on the opening day of the Ishinomaki Kawabiraki Festival (石巻川開き祭り), a summer tradition in Ishinomaki that gives thanks for the blessings of the Kitakami River (July 31-August 2, 2026; land events take place in central Ishinomaki, while the fireworks display is held at the special venue downstream of Kaihoku Bridge). By day, immerse yourself in the world of manga at the Ishinomori Manga Museum, a symbol of Ishinomaki, the town of manga. Next, take in a panoramic view of the Kitakami River's mouth and the Pacific Ocean from Hiyoriyama Park, then visit the Sun Juan Museum to see its magnificent replica of the Keicho Embassy ship. In the early evening, have an early dinner at a restaurant near Ishinomaki Station, take a short break at the Nigiwai Koryu Plaza in front of the station, and then head to the festival. The first night is lively with a pre-festival celebration, and on the second day, August 1, fireworks light up the Kitakami River's night sky from 19:00. Touring manga, history, and the scenery of the Kitakami River all in one day, this course is perfect for families.
