2026 Hofu Tenmangu Gotanshinsai (Birthday Festival) - Full Day Experience Course
A full-day course to enjoy the first day of the Gotanshinsai (August 3-5, 2026), the grand summer festival of Hofu Tenmangu (防府天満宮), known as Japan's first Tenmangu shrine. Spend the daytime exploring the elegant mansion and gardens of the Mouri Clan, touching history at Suo Kokubunji from the Nara period, and viewing Hofu's townscape from Kuwayama Park. After an early dinner at Matsuzaki-cho Shopping Street, spend the evening at the festival in the shrine grounds. This celebration of Sugawara no Michizane's birthday bathes the shrine in beautiful lantern light, creating an atmospheric summer night surrounded by festive crowds.
