2026 Kyoto Gyoen Demizu-no-Ogawa (出水の小川) Full-Day Course
In the middle of central Kyoto lies Kyoto Gyoen (京都御苑), home to Demizu-no-Ogawa (出水の小川), where you can play in the water for free. In a typical year the water flows all year round and the grounds are open all day. The 2026 water-flow period has not been announced, but the official information describes it as a popular spot for children playing in the water in summer. The venue is Kyoto Gyoen in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City, where well water pumped up from underground runs along an artificial stream about 100 m long. It is only a few centimeters deep, so even small children who are still afraid of water can start by putting their feet in. Restrooms and rest benches stand nearby and there is plenty of shade under the trees, which makes it easy for a family to settle in. Admission is free and the garden is open all day, so you can take your time. In the morning you visit Goo Shrine (護王神社) facing Karasuma-dori Street, then touch on the history of the court nobles' district at the Kan-in-no-miya Residence Site (閑院宮邸跡) inside the garden. Have lunch at the Nakadachiuri Rest House (中立売休憩所), then head straight to Demizu-no-Ogawa in the afternoon. Located in the city center and reachable by subway or city bus, it makes an easy day out close to home.
