2026 Kajo Central Plaza Fountain Full-Day Course
This is a city-center outing course built around the Kajo Central Plaza Fountain, directly connected to the west exit of JR Yamagata Station (JR山形駅) and easy to reach by train or by car. In the official Yamagata City list of 21 recommended parks for outings, it appears in the section for parks where you can play in water, introduced with the comment 「In summer there is a fountain and it is very cool」. However, no official announcement of the operating period or hours could be confirmed, so treat the opening period as unannounced and check the on-site operating status before you set out. Use is free, the plaza has benches, and public restrooms, coin parking, shopping facilities and restaurants are all nearby, which brings the reassurance only a city center can offer. In the morning, view the artifacts of the warlord who laid the foundations of Yamagata at the Mogami Yoshiaki Historical Museum (最上義光歴史館), then walk straight on along the moat of Kajo Park (霞城公園). Take lunch at a relaxed pace in Yamagata Marugoto-kan Beni no Kura, which makes fine use of its old storehouses. In the afternoon, return to Kajo Central to enjoy the hands-on exhibits of the Yamagata Prefectural Museum of Industry and Science (山形県産業科学館), and finish by catching the spray of the fountain in the plaza. Since it is linked directly to the station, you can retreat indoors immediately if the heat or the weather turns.
