2026 Shimogo Town Pool: A Full Day of Fun
This is a one-day course in Minami-Aizu centered on 'Shimogo Town Pool,' which typically opens during the town's elementary and junior high school summer vacation period (late July to late August). It runs in two sessions, 10:00-11:45 in the morning and 13:00-16:00 in the afternoon, and admission is free. The morning starts at Tonohetsuri, a nationally designated natural monument where the Aga River has carved tower-like cliffs over a million years. Crossing the suspension bridge to view the scenery from the opposite bank is quite impressive. Next, visit Yunokami Onsen Station, a station building with a thatched roof that is rare even nationwide. The waiting room has a traditional hearth, and together with the sight of the Aizu Railway trains pulling in, it feels as if time has stopped here. In the afternoon, head to Shimogo Town Pool, which has a general pool (50m x 7 lanes, 1.1-1.3m deep) and a children's pool with a slide (60cm deep) — and being free of charge on top of all that is a real bonus. Striking rock formations, a thatched-roof station, and a free pool: a day that truly captures the spirit of Minami-Aizu.
