Ascend to the Midway Point by Cable Car, Head to the Summit via Route 1

About this spot

About one hour by train from central Tokyo, this popular mountain boasts one of the world's highest numbers of climbers. Japan's steepest cable car whisks you to the midway point in one go, and from there, the paved Route 1 makes it possible for families with children to reach the summit. On clear days, you can see Mt. Fuji and the Kanto Plain from the summit—perfect for spreading out a picnic.

Tips

Route 1 is paved but has steep sections, so comfortable hiking shoes are essential. A baby carrier is safer than a stroller. During busy periods, there are queues for the cable car, so arriving early in the morning is recommended.

Best time to visit

The first cable car of the morning is usually less crowded—a good target; about 6 minutes to the mountain station
