Pray for Matchmaking at Kumagaya's Grand Shrine with Its Towering Great Zelkova

About this spot

An ancient shrine listed in the Engishiki (延喜式), said to trace its origins to antiquity and venerated as Kumagaya's chief tutelary shrine. The shrine grounds preserve a large bronze lantern donated by indigo dyers, telling the story of Kumagaya's prosperity as a merchant city. Known for matchmaking blessings, the annual summer 'Enmmusubi Wind Chimes' festival fills the grounds with soothing chimes.

Tips

About 10 minutes' walk from Seikei-en on an urban stroll. Omamori (charm) and ema (votive plaques) are available at the shrine office. During the summer wind chimes season, daytime is more photogenic.

Best time to visit

20–30 minutes for worship. Daytime is brighter and safer than evening.
