Ancient Temple Associated with Shinsengumi Vice-Commander Toshizo Hijikata—the Perfect Finale to Your Day
About this spot
One of the three major Fudo temples in the Kanto region, this esoteric Buddhist temple is greeted by a heavy-set Nio Gate and a five-tiered pagoda. Known as the temple where Shinsengumi Vice-Commander Toshizo Hijikata's ashes were laid to rest, the temple grounds feature a bronze statue of him. A scenic spot for early-summer hydrangeas and autumn foliage, with danjo (dumplings) and traditional sweets shops lining the approach from the station.
Tips
The temple grounds are open for free worship and you can walk around leisurely even in the evening. The hydrangea season (typically June) can get crowded. Pick up Takahata manju (local sweets) on the approach from the station as a souvenir on your way back.

30 minutes in the evening; the hydrangeas in early June are the seasonal specialty
