About this spot

A 320m pedestrian-only suspension bridge spanning Shiobara Dam Lake. It is one of the largest unstiffened-girder footbridges on Honshu, and from the bridge you can take in Shiobara Gorge's spectacular views in every season. As its name suggests it's famous for autumn foliage, but the fresh greenery of early summer is equally refreshing. Located at the gateway to Shiobara Onsen, it's the perfect first stop on a drive.

Tips

It sways more than you'd expect, making for a real thrill. A classic move is to stop at the center of the bridge and photograph the panorama of the dam lake and gorge. The adjacent shop is a great spot to take a break or check out souvenirs.

Best time to visit

Allow about 45 minutes. During the autumn-foliage season the parking lot fills up in the morning, so arrive early.
