A Peaceful Moment: Viewing the Garden from a Second-Floor Tatami Room at a Merchant's Villa

About this spot

Built in the Taisho era as a summer retreat for the Saito family, counted among Niigata's three great merchant clans, this mansion showcases the refined aesthetic of a shipping magnate. The impressive strolling garden makes clever use of the natural sand-dune topography, and the view from the second-floor great room overlooking the garden is like gazing upon a masterpiece painting. Sitting barefoot on the tatami and admiring the garden from the open veranda is the epitome of an elegant date. Beautiful in every season, this stately home deserves more than one visit.

Tips

Remove your shoes before entering the mansion—wear comfortable socks for easy changes. The garden paths have some elevation changes, so wear appropriate walking shoes. Take your time progressing through the mansion in the designated order.

Best time to visit
