Pay Respects Together at Niigata's Guardian Shrine, Blessed with Relationship Fortune

About this spot

Niigata's chief sanctuary, long protecting the city, this shrine is revered as a deity of matchmaking and relationships. The tree-lined approach softens as evening approaches, providing a serene conclusion to your street walk. The adjacent Hakusan Park is among Japan's pioneering urban parks, inviting peaceful wandering past lotus ponds and wisteria trellises. Draw an omikuji (fortune slip) together and reflect on your day's journey.

Tips

Omamori (protective amulets) for relationships are popular with couples. After paying respects, exit toward Hakusan Park for a pleasant waterside stroll. It's within walking distance of the Furumachi area and well-positioned for finding dinner nearby.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. The evening grounds are peaceful with soft, gentle light.
