Pay Respects at Echigo's Foremost Shrine "Oyahiko-sama" with Two Bows, Four Claps, and One Bow

Nestled at the foot of Mt. Yahiko overlooking the Echigo Plain, this foremost shrine of Echigo is affectionately called "Oyahiko-sama" by locals. The enshrined deity is Amakazan-no-Mikoto, believed to have taught the people of Echigo agriculture, salt production, and fishing. The approach path, lined with ancient cedar and zelkova trees, purifies the spirit with every step. The view of Mt. Yahiko, the sacred mountain and repository of the kami, rising behind the main hall is described simply as magnificent. The unique ritual of two bows, four claps, and one bow is a point not to be missed by couples who love shrine visits.
Tips
The shrine grounds are laid with gravel and are flat, so walking at a leisurely pace puts minimal strain on your legs and feet. Seal stamps (goshuin) are available at the office. There are several free parking areas, but on holidays before 9 a.m., spaces near the temple town fill up quickly, so arriving early is recommended.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Before 9 a.m., there are fewer visitors and it's quieter.
