A complex of mansion and storehouses built by Jintaro Yoshizawa, who made his fortune with medicinal "Saffron Sake" (サフラン酒) during the Meiji period. The earthen storehouse walls are decorated with vibrant trowel paintings (鏝絵), showcasing the pinnacle of plastering craftsmanship, earning Settaya renown as a "treasure trove of trowel paintings." The grounds feature a garden and cafe space, making it an ideal base for exploring the town. The story of the brewery town begins here.
Tips
Site viewing is free (interior of the storehouse varies by day). The Settaya area is compact and walkable; obtaining a walking map at the start is convenient. Use nearby public parking lots for vehicles.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Around 9:30 AM is best for photographing the trowel paintings when fewer people are present.
