View the fault line marking the boundary between Eastern and Western Japan
About this spot
A geological observation park where the fault line of the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line that divides the Japanese archipelago east and west is artificially exposed for close observation. You can see the boundary where east-side and west-side rocks of different colors and origins meet, and the experience of "crossing Eastern and Western Japan" leaves a strong impression on children. This is the definitive science field trip where you can verify the Fossa Magna story learned at the museum in actual ground. Geological highlights such as pillow lava also dot the riverside areas nearby.
Tips
From the parking area to the outcrop, it's about a 10-15 minute walk on a forest path, so wear comfortable walking shoes. As it's in a mountainous area, insect repellent is helpful in summer. Some periods during the snowy season are closed to visitors, so visiting during the green season is recommended. Viewing is free.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. The bright pre-noon hours make the fault outcrop easier to observe.
