About this spot

A representative example of Meiji-era kitamae-bune merchant houses and a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, Mori-ke is Iwase's iconic landmark. Spacious reception rooms surround a soaring void space called "Oi" (オイ), and the luxurious interior is lavished with fine timbers and rare stones imported from across Japan by the merchant fleet. Every architectural detail, from the earthen floor to the fittings, reflects the refined aesthetic of the wealthy merchants of the era. The stories of kitamae-bune trade shared by the staff add further depth to your visit. Beginning your Old Hokuriku Highway exploration here is the traditional starting point.

Tips

It's about a 5-minute walk from Portram's Higashi-Iwase Station, with views of Omachi Street's traditional houses along the way. Visitors remove their shoes indoors, so slip-on shoes are recommended. A combined admission ticket with Baba-ke is available, offering good value if visiting both.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Visiting early in the morning after opening allows for quiet, unhurried viewing.
