View the Soaring Beams and Expansive Earthen Floor of a Celebrated Merchant's Estate

About this spot

The residence of the Baba family, considered the foremost among Iwase's five great merchant families who accumulated wealth through kitamae-bune trade. Located just steps from Mori-ke, its impressively high vaulted wooden beams, spacious earthen floor, and rooms and storehouses extending deeper into the structure all testify to the immense wealth generated by Japan Sea maritime commerce. Exhibits document the family's contributions to education and regional development, allowing you to appreciate both the building's architecture and its history. Comparing it with Mori-ke reveals distinctive design choices between merchant houses, making the visit particularly interesting.

Tips

Just a short walk from Mori-ke, making it convenient to visit both back-to-back. Shoes are also removed here. The spacious interior benefits from taking your time. After your visit, enjoy further exploration by admiring the traditional houses and decorative eaves along Omachi Street.
