About this spot
A grand Jodo Shinshu temple located on elevated ground in Fushiki, Takaoka, with the main hall, large tatami hall, and entrance vestibule designated as National Treasures. The temple thrived as a site associated with the Maeda clan of the Kaga Domain, surrounded by vast grounds enclosed by moats and earthen walls resembling a castle. Exploring the temple grounds while searching for the 'Seven Mysteries of Shokoji'—including the 'Sterile Ginkgo'—is part of the enjoyment. After extensive restoration work over many years, the temple has regained its former splendor.
Tips
The grounds feature gravel and stone paths, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. A guide to the Seven Mysteries can be obtained at the reception desk—exploring them together as a couple adds to the fun. Free parking available.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Early morning visits are less crowded, allowing for a peaceful experience.
