A chaya district with a refined, subdued charm where wooden tea house structures line the banks of the Asano River. With fewer visitors than Higashi Chaya District, you can walk quietly while listening to the river's murmur. Narrow stone-stepped alleyways like "Kuragari Slope" (famous for its literary associations) and "Akari Slope" promise a feeling of stepping into a storybook. As dusk approaches, lantern lights begin to glow along the eaves, creating a romantic scene fitting as the finale to your day.
Tips
Strolling is free, and the riverside promenade is flat and easy to walk. Kuragari Slope has steep stone steps, so watch your footing. The river breeze in the evening is cool, so bringing a light wrap is wise. The view from the base of Asano River Bridge is a classic photo spot.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Dusk is the ideal time—when lantern lights begin to glow, the atmosphere is at its most enchanting.
