A Scenic Drive Along Japan's Only Drivable Sandy Beach Where You Can Drive at the Water's Edge
About this spot
This is Japan's only tourist road where you can drive an ordinary vehicle along the wet sand at the water's edge for approximately 8km. The fine sand becomes firm when saturated with seawater, so regular cars can drive safely. Rolling down your windows lets the sound of waves and sea breeze reach you directly inside the car, creating the sensation of driving over the sea itself. You can stop the car, get out onto the sand, play in the waves, or collect shells. This scenic road is a dream destination for families who love driving.
Tips
The golden rule is to stay away from the very edge of the waves and drive slowly on the firmly packed sand. The road may be closed due to bad weather or high waves, so check road conditions in advance. Wearing sandals or water-friendly shoes is helpful when getting out of the car.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Early morning has less traffic, making it easy to drive slowly and take photos.
