An ancient shrine nestled in a pine forest overlooking the Japan Sea, located near the Ataka Barrier, the setting of the kabuki play "Kanjincho." Named after the legend of Yoshitsune and his followers cleverly passing through the barrier thanks to Benkei's quick thinking, the shrine is revered as a guardian deity for overcoming obstacles. Many visitors come during important academic or work transitions to pray for success. Nearby, the Ataka Barrier ruins feature statues and informational facilities related to the legend, and walking through both the shrine grounds and the barrier site allows visitors to experience the historical stages firsthand. The view of the Japan Sea framed by the pine forest at sunset provides a fitting and beautiful conclusion to your day.
Tips
Worship at the shrine is free. The grounds are flat and easy to navigate for families with small children. The coastal area can be windy, so bringing a light jacket is recommended. Free parking available. If time permits, a walk through the pine grove near the Ataka Barrier ruins is also highly recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Early evening is the most beautiful time to see the pine forest and Japan Sea scenery.
