About this spot

The terminus of the Echizen Railway's (えちぜん鉄道) Mikuni Awara Line (三国芦原線), where a small wooden station building standing right by the harbor stirs a sense of travel nostalgia. This retro station, which retains traces of the former Japan National Railways' Mikuni Line, is sure to make train-loving families' hearts race the moment they step off. Nearby stands the old Megane Bridge (旧眼鏡橋), a beautiful brick arch built in a spiral pattern, letting you enjoy a bit of railway heritage exploring too. Photographing the single-car train stopped at the platform together with the station building makes a perfect shot to open your trip.

Tips

It's a leisurely, about 50-minute train ride from Fukui Station (福井駅) on the Echizen Railway. Some daytime trains carry an attendant, making it reassuring for families with children. The area in front of the station is small, so once you've finished photographing and visiting the Megane Bridge, head to Tojinbo (東尋坊) by bus or taxi.
