Marvel at the columnar cliff formations from above and by scenic boat, and enjoy a fresh seafood bowl lunch at the shopping street

About this spot

Towering columnar rock formations stretch for about 1 km along these dramatic cliffs, designated as a National Natural Monument and among the finest scenic spots in the Hokuriku region. The sheer drop to the Sea of Japan viewed from the cliff top is spectacular, and boarding a sightseeing boat allows you to see the cliff formations from below in a grand panorama—leaving train-loving children absolutely delighted. Walking the natural rocky terrain adds to the sense of adventure and exploration. Along the entrance street runs a shopping arcade with restaurants serving fresh seafood bowls and grilled squid, offering authentic harbor town cuisine.

Tips

The rocky area has no railings and uneven footing, so always hold hands with children and never approach the cliff edge. Sightseeing boats may not operate when waves are rough, so check the day's sailing conditions before boarding. The shopping street gets crowded at lunch time, so arriving slightly early for smoother seating.

Best time to visit

Takes about 2 hours 50 minutes (including sightseeing boat and lunch). Morning provides better lighting for photography with less backlighting.
