An ancient shrine long cherished as the guardian deity of the port town of Mikuni (三国), also known as the stage for the Mikuni Festival, counted among the three great festivals of the Hokuriku region. The sturdy wooden gate tower is well worth seeing, and the giant zelkova tree towering within the grounds speaks to the shrine's long history. This quiet grove, set apart from the town's bustle, makes a perfect place for a closing visit at the end of the day. Give thanks for a safe trip and put your hands together as a family.

Tips

The grounds have gravel paths and stone steps, so it's reassuring to leave the stroller at the entrance and carry small children instead. After visiting, it's about a 15-minute walk to Mikuni Station (三国駅) on the Echizen Railway, so you can enjoy another train ride on the way home. In the evening there are fewer visitors, so you can spend time quietly.

Best time to visit

About 30 minutes. In the evening, the slanting light makes the gate tower look beautiful.
