About this spot
The head temple of the Soto Zen sect founded by Zen Master Dogen in 1244, where many monks continue their training today at this active Zen training hall. The seven main halls nestled on the mountainside are connected by covered corridors; walking on the polished wooden floors envelops you in a silence that naturally straightens your posture. The highlight is the "Ceiling Painting Room" in Kasaramatsuseki Hall, where 230 bird-and-flower paintings cover the entire ceiling. The approach lined with centuries-old cedar trees and moss-covered stone walls are also beautiful, allowing you to experience the world of Zen with all your senses.
Tips
The tour primarily covers corridors with many stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. Visitors must remove shoes at certain areas and maintain the prescribed route, so slip-on shoes are practical. Early morning visits are quieter and more peaceful. A municipal parking lot and souvenir shops are located at the gate entrance; it's just a few minutes' walk from the parking area to the main gate.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 2 hours. The quietest and most recommended time is just after opening around 9 AM
