About this spot

A quiet ancient temple in the mountains, traditionally said to have been founded in the early Heian period by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. Both the main hall and three-story pagoda, built during the Kamakura period, are designated national treasures and are known as Fukui Prefecture's only national treasure structures. Climbing stone steps surrounded by cryptomeria woods reveals a graceful pagoda with a beautiful cypress bark roof, its dignified form captivating viewers. Explanations from temple priests and guides offer deeper understanding of the Buddhist sculptures and the temple's history.

Tips

Located in the Matsunaga district, about 15 minutes by car from Obama City center, with free parking. The grounds feature continuous stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Admission is approximately 500 yen; definitely allocate time to hear the in-temple explanations. The woodland colors are especially spectacular during new green and autumn foliage seasons.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. In the afternoon, filtered sunlight beautifully illuminates the pagoda for photographs.
