A representative Wakasa temple whose dry landscape garden set against a mountainside slope is designated a national scenic site. The composition of white sand spread across the garden with mountain greenery encroaching is impeccably refined, and when viewed from the thatched-roof study hall, it frames like a single painting. The magnificent large ginkgo tree standing in the middle of the garden is also noteworthy, and the borrowed scenery changes with the seasons, never growing tiresome. Sitting on the veranda contemplating the garden is a luxury unique to adult travel.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Myotsuji Temple. Admission is approximately 400 yen; you can remove your shoes and ascend to the study hall to view the garden from the front. Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off. While popular during azalea and autumn foliage seasons, normally it remains peaceful and tranquil.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. Afternoon's slanting light beautifully accentuates the shadows and contours of the white sand.
