About this spot

A settlement that prospered as a post town on the "Saba Kaido" that transported Wakasa's seafood to the imperial capital in Kyoto, designated as a nationally important traditional building preservation district. Along the street, wooden-planked townhouses with latticed doors create a charming streetscape, with the clear irrigation channel called "Maegawa" flowing noisily in front of the houses, evoking travel spirit. The former guard station and museums recount the transportation activities of yesteryear. Local specialties include kuzu dumplings and kuzu noodles made from local arrowroot, which alongside mackerel sushi and grilled mackerel are classic souvenirs from the Land of Miketsukuni.

Tips

Located 20-25 minutes by car from Obama City center. It's convenient to park at the adjacent Wakasa Kumakawa Post Town roadside station and walk. The townscape is level and easy to explore; a leisurely walk from one end to the other takes about 30 minutes. Shops close early in the evening, so purchase souvenirs when you find them.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. Evening's raking light makes the wooden-planked townscape even more beautiful.
