Hike the walking trail along the gorge, gazing up at Kakuenpo Peak and the Stone Gate

About this spot

This scenic area in the northern part of Kofu City is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and is celebrated as 'Japan's most beautiful gorge.' The walking trail along the Ara River reveals a succession of granite formations sculpted by nature, including Kakuenpo Peak, the main summit at approximately 180 meters high, and the Stone Gate, formed by layers of massive boulders. The gently ascending path is ideal for an introductory gorge hike, and you'll find yourself losing track of time while walking amid the gentle sound of the river and the calls of wild birds. The gorge's charm lies in its ever-changing appearance with the seasons—stunning in fresh green spring and vibrant autumn foliage alike.

Tips

The walking trail is mostly paved with gentle slopes, but the distance is considerable, so comfortable hiking shoes are essential. With a car, the free parking lots at Shosenkyo-guchi (Tenjinmori) or near the waterfall are convenient; parking at the waterfall and making a round trip to the Kakuenpo area is popular. Another classic approach is to take the bus from Kofu Station and hike up one direction. Shops and tea houses are concentrated at the gorge entrance and the waterfall area, so it's reassuring to bring your own drinks.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours. The morning is recommended when the clear light makes the river surface sparkle.
