This celebrated waterfall at the far end of Shosenkyo Gorge drops approximately 30 meters and is listed among Japan's 100 Best Waterfalls, serving as the symbol of Shosenkyo. The water flowing straight down the granite cliff face is spectacular, and standing on the viewing platform, you'll feel a cool mist wash over you. On sunny mornings, a rainbow may form near the waterfall pool, creating a spectacular sight befitting the climax of the gorge hike. The sense of accomplishment felt only by those who have hiked up the walking trail adds to the experience.
Tips
The stone steps around the viewing platform are wet and slippery from waterfall spray, so watch your footing. It's just a short walk down the stone steps from the shops at the waterfall area, making access from the waterfall parking lot simple. For photography, the morning light filtering into the gorge is ideal. Even in summer, it's refreshingly cool here, so a light jacket is comfortable to have.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes. In the morning light, a rainbow may appear at the waterfall pool.
